“The road up and the road down is one and the same.” Heraclitus
You could interpret that quote in lots of ways, and maybe we have often felt like our own roads just kept going down. But now, at the end of a long, snowy winter and we hope the reduced Covid threat, maybe now would be a good time to think about finding our way again to the road that goes back up!
With so much behind us, it’s time to start making plans for the rest of the year and putting our lives in a different perspective. When we’re inside our homes and maybe not getting out as much as usual due to Covid and the weather, we can get lost in negative or sad thoughts. It’s easy to do and we’ve all been there. Life is hard and we all have things we wish we could change, but, if we focus on just those things we start on a downward road and we forget about the things we can be positive about.
Let’s try this spring to be conscious of our thoughts and focus on what makes us happy. What do you have to look forward to this spring? How can you improve someone else’s day? Even smiling at someone can help brighten your day and theirs; sometimes it’s just the simple, little things that keep us going and gives us hope.
If this sounds too Pollyannish – too cheerful no matter the situation – remember that the road downhill is a quick trip, the road back up takes effort and strength and sometimes struggle, but, when you get to the top the view is clearer and the sun shines.
We’re all in this together – let’s keep going and look forward to better days!!
